The Point

Over the past 48 hours, I have asked myself more than once, "what the hell is the point of all this?" No, I wasn't questioning my existence in the face of the inevitable 2012 apocalypse. Instead I was sitting in front of this damn computer, rebuilding the site from scratch, questioning if it was even worth it. There's no money in it, no fame, no fringe benefits, no real discernible return at all. Yet I continue to pour hours and hours into this site, a fact my wife never fails to point out. Because we have turned down advertising dollars, we are stuck in the web hosting equivalent of Pampers pull-ups. Compounding the misery, we are relying on my very questionable programming skills.

So why?

In the end, it really is simple, this is what we love. The very core of this culture is passion. Sometimes it is tough to spot as countless peddlers of smut vie for the fast buck of the youth demographic. Back at the start of all this, no one expected to get rich, we were not fighting to get on lifts in expectation of a payday. It was about passion and for some of us it still is.

In between the Mountain Dew and American Express commercials, you may not have noticed, but snowboarding is on the decline. The mainstream is squeezing the last remaining drips of opportunity out as they did to skateboarding in the 80's. Take a look around the mountain next time you are out, the packs of young punks are on twin tips skis not decks. The sort of committed riders of my generation are switching back to skis because they don't like bending over or so they can go with their kids. I keep hearing from former friends of how they rode for 15+ years but decided to switch back. And whether you want to believe it or not, skiers are laughing, they took our cool and now they are winning.

So here we are, on our long trip back to the beginning. Why do we do this? Because we are snowboarders, and at the core of our being is a spirit that we can do it regardless of what people tell us. We will never be as cool as skateboarders or as soulful as surfers, but this is what we love and this is what we hope to share through this site.

The Out East Road Trip

Stop me if you have heard this one, two fat old guys head out in a comically small car in search of powder, on the worst snow year ever, on the East coast, in late March. No really, that actually happened, I know as I was there to witness every sorry sad moment of this homerlike quest. For the...

Down at the Open

My daughter stared at the school bus, a bit confused, "that's for school kids, I thought we were going to the snowboarding event." I responded, in a typically sarcastic fashion, "well, we are going to the school of snowboarding." Over the last month, I sacrificed some turns to spend time with my...

Get Your "Terje Was Right" Sticker Now

They are finally here and available for purchase, the "Terje Was Right" stickers. These stickers let you tell the world how you feel while supporting our little corner of the internets. If you should decide to tell the world by tagging a stop sign or lift tower (not that we condone such behavior...

A Pipe Hiking Rant

I will always view snowboarding through a lens filtered by my early days at Killington. We all have that influence, the place where we progressed rapidly from just turning to learning tricks, and those experiences with always shape our approach. Some of my fondest memories are centered around...

Hitting the Fog Line at Whistler

I wish this was an epic tale of riding at one of the premiere resorts in the world. Unfortunately that just is not the case. While conditions were less than stellar and it could not be classified as a great day, I did have a great time.

Doubling Up on the Powder

Yes. This is the single worst cover photo for a powder report in the history of 7YW. So kids, what did we learn? Charge the f'n battery when it's going to be sub zero, arctic, chill. So the report, sans photos. I pulled off the double pow attack for the second time this season, meeting up...

A Seven Years Morning

The second of 30 poaches will surely go down as one of the best. Our little section of Vermont got thumped unexpectedly* by a massive helping of light powder. *Note: I had tracked this storm on the 7YW weather page since xmas eve and was ready. J-Mac and I met up in the MRG lot at 5:30-6 am. My...
