Union Milan Bindings Review

Given all the hype surrounding Union, I have been somewhat disappointed with my Milan bindings. It's not that they're horrible and I hate them, but I am also not jumping up and down with glee at how wonderful they are.

First, the pros:

  • The styling is great. I have the wine-colored bindings (they also come in black) and, as someone who likes a little bling, I enjoy the combination of the burgundy straps and highbacks with the gold buckles and detailing.
    • They are light. I mean really light. Apparently the fact that the buckles are made from aluminum helps with this.
      • Adjustability. I've never had bindings before where even the heal cup is adjustable (sliding backwards and forwards). It's good stuff.

      Now, the cons:

      • The toe strap buckles don't have rachets and were incredibly hard to disengage from the ladders when the bindings were brand-new (causing me to bend my fingernail back a couple times). These buckles do seem to be loosening up with more use, but I still have issues undoing them sometimes.
        • The stitching on the inside of the front highback started unraveling after the first time I used the bindings, and continues to unravel more every time I ride.
          • The heel strap rachets often pop out as I'm getting them tight. They don't stick as well as I would like.
            • The screws holding the highbacks to the heel cups and heel straps constantly come loose, meaning that I have to tighten them every time I ride. Wondering if I'm going lose a screw in the snow soon.
              • Sizing. They only come in two sizes and I happen to be right on the cusp between the two, meaning that the bindings are a bit big for me, but if I go down a size, they're too small. Why not three sizes, Union?

A final thought that I won't list with the cons because I usually have this problem with bindings, so maybe it's just me. I can't seem to get the straps adjusted right for my boots and my toes still go numb every time I ride. This is probably inevitable, but it would be cool if there were a binding out there that fit well enough to prevent the numbness.

The Trees of Killington

Yesterday Seth and I returned to our old stomping ground: Killington. Both of us grew up snowboarding there, but we haven't been back much in the past 10 years or so. A lot of people like to get down on Killington because it's huge, popular, and often over-run with tourists. However, for those in...

Conveyor Belts & A Single Mitt

Today started off in an auspicious manner when I had to clear some fresh snow off my car and actually arrived on time to meet my brother in the Waits-burg grocery store parking lot. This was followed by a stop for a delicious breakfast sandwich at the famous Vermont Country Store in Pittsfield....

Hollandaise Sauce is Awesome

7YW Rating: 10.0 /10.0
My husband recently surprised me by making Hollandaise sauce to have on our broccoli at dinner. It was made from a mix, not from scratch, but it was still awesome because Hollandaise sauce is always awesome, no matter how it's prepared, where it's consumed, or what accompanies it. Over the years I...

STANCE snowboard video review

7YW Rating: 9.0 /10.0
I recently had the pleasure of watching the all-women snowboarding video STANCE. Over all, I give it high marks: I loved the music and cinematography, and was amazed by the style and skill of all the riders. I mean, wow, women's snowboarding has progressed a ton since I first started riding sixteen...
