Anything from solid yellow ice to packed powder to fluffy powder

Yesterday Seth and I returned to our old stomping ground: Killington. Both of us grew up snowboarding there, but we haven't been back much in the past 10 years or so. A lot of people like to get down on Killington because it's huge, popular, and often over-run with tourists. However, for those in the know, it is truly one of the best places for skiing and riding in the East.

Luckily since neither Seth nor I were into riding trees when we were teenagers, we had Brad as our guide. Brad is a master of finding stashes of powder in the trees even days after the last storm. Somehow he managed to lead us from one side of the giant resort to the other with only occasional forays out of the trees and onto the trails. Considering that this was a mid-winter Saturday at Killington and there were many many people on the hill, it was also incredible that we saw virtually no one else riding the same trees as us. We squeezed through some pretty tight forest in places, but were rewarded with lots of powder turns and even some, dare I say it, face shots.

After bidding adieu to Brad, who undoubtedly found some more tree runs after leaving us, Seth and I went to check out the Stash before heading out. Unfortunately, we missed the top part of the Stash, but still got a pretty good look at it by hitting the second half. It was super-fun with some banked boardercross-style turns and many wooden features and hits. On a spring day, I could see lapping the Stash all day long and not getting bored. Seth followed up the Stash with a run through the pipe and reported that it was stupidly big and icy.

Finally, we closed out our day with a top-to-bottom Great Eastern run, the fastest, most fun green circle anywhere. All in all, a great day at Killington. I still love it as much as I did when I was 15 and lapping the mythical park on Bear.

Chowder on ice

Today started off in an auspicious manner when I had to clear some fresh snow off my car and actually arrived on time to meet my brother in the Waits-burg grocery store parking lot. This was followed by a stop for a delicious breakfast sandwich at the famous Vermont Country Store in Pittsfield....
